Trump wants the Supreme Court to suspend TikTok ban

It is planned that the law that has the potential to prohibit the application will go into effect the day before the inauguration of the President-elect.

The Supreme Court has been petitioned by President-elect Donald Trump to postpone enforcement of the rule that might prohibit the use of TikTok until after he has been inaugurated. In an amicus brief, Trump's attorney D. John Sauer stated that the future president desires the opportunity to find a solution to the problem "through political means." Sauer writes that Trump wants this opportunity.

On January 19, 2025, the law that requires a ban or sale of TikTok is scheduled to go into effect. This is just one day before Trump is scheduled to be inaugurated as president. The timing of the prohibition is described as "unfortunately timed" in the brief, and it is argued that the next president ought to have more time to begin working on a settlement with TikTok. In its pleas for a delay in the ban, the legal team for TikTok stated a fear that was comparable to this one. The document also makes reference to Trump's experience in "dealmaking" and his social media network, which is called Truth Social.

'President Trump alone possesses the consummate dealmaking expertise, the electoral mandate, and the political will to negotiate a resolution to save the platform while addressing the national security concerns expressed by the Government, concerns that President Trump himself has acknowledged,' writes Sauer. "President Trump is the only person who possesses all of these things."

The position that President Trump has taken about TikTok is very different from the one that he adopted during his first term, when he attempted to ban the app in the year 2020. Additionally, he said that Microsoft could "work out a deal, an appropriate deal, so the Treasury of the United States gets a lot of money," but he did not elaborate on the specifics of how such a deal would be implemented.

During the course of his second campaign, President Trump changed his mind about whether or not to ban TikTok. As he stated in an interview with CNBC's Squawk Box in March, if TikTok were to be banned, it would "make Facebook bigger," and he believes that Facebook is an enemy of the people, along with a significant portion of the media.

The arguments about the ban are expected to be heard by the Supreme Court on Saturday, January 10.

Microsoft's FTC antitrust probe apparently targets software bundling

Is the year 1998 once more?

According to reports, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is conducting an investigation into Microsoft as if it were 1998. It has been reported by ProPublica that the investigation being conducted by the outgoing chair Lina Khan is gaining momentum in the final days of the administration of Vice President Joe Biden. There is a specific cause for concern for the Federal Trade Commission over Microsoft's practice of bundling the ubiquitous Office products with cloud computing and cybersecurity services. That includes an agreement to upgrade government packages for a limited time, which, in essence, had the effect of utilizing a government cybersecurity crisis to sell additional licenses. This deal was executed in order to increase sales.

Reports from Bloomberg and the Financial Times in November about an investigation into the Windows manufacturer by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are given further information as a result of this. According to the media, Microsoft's rivals have voiced their dissatisfaction with the company's decision to bundle its popular software with cloud services, finding it more difficult to compete. According to ProPublica, attorneys from the Federal Trade Commission have lately conducted interviews and booked meetings with Microsoft's rivals.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a civil investigative demand, which is essentially a subpoena, which requires Microsoft to provide over evidence that is pertinent to the case. Microsoft has confirmed this information to ProPublica. The letter from the Federal Trade Commission is "broad, wide ranging, and requests things that are out of the realm of possibility to even be logical," according to a spokeswoman for Microsoft, who disclosed this information to the journal without offering any examples that were made public.

Following a second article published by ProPublica in November, which described how Microsoft appeared to take advantage of a series of cyberattacks in order to sell more licenses to the United States government, the investigation has been launched. As a result of a meeting with Vice President Biden in the summer of 2021, it was reported that the business made an offer to update the government's existing bundles, which included Windows and its Office suite, to a more expensive version that included its advanced cybersecurity tools. Consultants were also dispatched by Microsoft to install the upgrades and provide employees with training on how to use them.

Following the conclusion of the experiment, numerous departments and agencies within the United States government, including the entirety of the Defense Department's military services, accepted the offer and started paying for the more expensive bundles. (The inconvenience of moving to a different cybersecurity solution after the trial period was up almost certainly ensured that this would be the case.) According to the story provided by ProPublica, Microsoft is essentially using a cybersecurity problem to its advantage in order to increase sales and boost its bottom line. Just some things that are late-stage capitalism, you guys.

It is ironic that the sales strategy was the result of security flaws that were committed by Microsoft, as you may have anticipated. The SolarWinds hack, which took advantage of a vulnerability in a Microsoft identity service, prompted Vice President Biden to make a request to the leaders of large technology companies to strengthen the government's cybersecurity. It has been revealed that the corporation was aware that the application included a "security nightmare" that enabled hackers to impersonate authorized personnel and investigate critical material without arousing suspicion. However, fixing the vulnerability would make it more difficult for the government to log in when the company was competing for contracts in the United States. There have been reports that Microsoft has chosen to remain silent rather than risk losing revenue.

According to the opinions of specialists who were interviewed by ProPublica, the government trial sales plan might have been in violation of legislation concerning competition and contracting. According to the magazine, even Microsoft's legal team was concerned that the transaction would raise antitrust concerns.

If you recognize this, it is a reference to the antitrust action that the government filed against Microsoft in the year 1998. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) accused the business of engaging in anticompetitive tactics by incorporating Internet Explorer with Windows. This action was seen as restricting competitors like Netscape in the early days of the internet. Bundling was also a star of the show.

Xbox Cloud Gaming has encountered loading issues for 24 hours

If the games do not disconnect first, the loading time for them is significantly longer than usual.

If you have attempted to use Xbox Cloud Streaming and had problems loading games or sudden disconnections, you are not the only one who has had these experiences. Ever since Thursday, the game streaming services offered by Microsoft have been suffering problems, and even after twenty-four hours, they are not completely back up today.

Users on the subreddit r/xcloud, which is dedicated to Xbox Cloud Gaming, have reported waiting times that are extremely long in order to get a game to load. This has stretched a process that is meant to be instantaneous into a wait that can last for fifty minutes or even longer. According to the status page of Microsoft, the business warns that "you may have trouble starting cloud games or be unexpectedly disconnected from a game after it begins."

On Thursday, Microsoft admitted that Xbox Cloud Gaming was experiencing problems. Today, the firm issued a statement stating that "users may see an incorrectly high wait time when attempting to launch a cloud gaming title," but that the company anticipates that everyone will be able to connect to the cloud gaming service at a faster rate than that. Whether this indicates that the problem has been repaired, is in the process of being resolved, or what the problem was in the first place is unclear; nonetheless, Indiasocialbook has reached out to the company in order to obtain information and will provide an update if we obtain any additional information.

However, any sort of problem with the service hits harder in light of Microsoft's "This is an Xbox" marketing push, which made the ability to stream Xbox games almost anywhere a primary benefit of utilizing the company's platform. Xbox Cloud Gaming has faced outages in the past, but any kind of hiccup with the service hits harder.

Apple dropped the first eight minutes of Severance season two

At the same time, it is quite likely that the corporation will provide non-subscribers with a free weekend to watch content.

On January 17, the debut of the second season of the hugely successful science fiction drama Severance will finally take place. On the other hand, Apple has just given us a gift by releasing the first eight minutes of the season. It has been over three years after the first season of the show was finished airing, so this is a lovely small gift for the holiday season.

You will be able to locate the exclusive preview on the Severance page of the Apple TV+ app, which is located in the Bonus Content area. There will be no spoilers in this section; however, the sample does discuss the aftermath of the events that occurred in the first season and may even touch on the unexpected cliffhanger that occurred.

Certain employees at a secretive business "sever" their work selves from their normal selves in the science fiction film Severance. For those who are not familiar with the film, Severance is a spin on the concept of work-life balance. The end product is a terrifying and oftentimes humorous discourse about human identity and the lengths to which our corporate rulers will go in order to make a profit. It's done pretty well. What's the best part? Newcomers won't have to wait three years in order to catch the second season of the show.

Additionally, Apple TV+ has just published a number of photographs on social media that strongly suggest the company is intending to offer a free weekend of sorts to those who do not have a subscription to the service on January 4 and 5. With phrases such as "see for yourself" and "save the date," the photographs are all labeled with the appropriate phrases.

In the event that this is accurate, it would be an excellent way to browse through Apple's extensive collection of science fiction originals without having to pay for a subscription. In recent years, the streaming service has established itself as the de facto home of science fiction by broadcasting a number of notable episodes, including Severance, Silo, Foundation, and For All Mankind, amongst many others.

Public benefit corporation is part of OpenAI's for-profit agenda

The non-profit organization of the corporation would lose its supervisory position as a result of this shift.

After months of conjecture, OpenAI has officially disclosed the manner in which it intends to transform itself into a business that is for profit. OpenAI said on Thursday that it intends to transition its for-profit arm into a Public Benefit Corporation sometime in the year 2025. The announcement was made in a blog post that was written by the board of directors of OpenAI. Public-benefit corporations, often known as B Corps, are organizations that are run for profit and strive to strike a balance between the interests of its stakeholders and the impact they have on society.

It was said by OpenAI that "as we enter 2025, we will have to become more than a lab and a startup — we have to become an enduring company." OpenAI also mentioned that several of its competitors are registered as PBCs, such as Anthropic and even Elon Musk's own xAI. If we were to make this move, we would be able to raise the necessary cash on conventional terms, just like other companies operating in this sector.

The nonprofit division of OpenAI would continue to hold a stake in the for-profit unit in the form of shares "at a fair valuation determined by independent financial advisors," but it would no longer have direct management of the company as a result of the change. According to OpenAI, "Our plan would result in one of the best resourced non-profit organizations in the history of the world."

In the aftermath of the restructure, the for-profit section would be in charge of monitoring OpenAI's "operations and business," while the nonprofit arm would function independently, with its own leadership team and a concentration on charity endeavors in the fields of education, science, and health care.

No information was provided by OpenAI regarding whether or not CEO Sam Altman will be granted an ownership stake as a result of the restructure. During the course of the previous year, the board of directors of OpenAI momentarily terminated Altman's employment before bringing him back. This action was the catalyst for the institutional crisis that led to the announcement that was made this week. There are estimates that suggest that the for-profit division of OpenAI might be worth as much as $150 billion. For the purpose of developing artificial general intelligence, OpenAI predicted that it will require a minimum of ten billion dollars in funding in 2019. In October, the corporation was successful in securing new capital totaling $6 billion.

"The hundreds of billions of dollars that major companies are now investing into the development of artificial intelligence show what it will really take for OpenAI to continue pursuing the mission," OpenAI said. It is necessary for us to raise a greater amount of funds than we had anticipated. We are interested in receiving financial backing from investors; but, at this level of capital, we require conventional equity and less structural bespokeness.

OpenAI is likely to encounter a number of obstacles in the process of putting its plan into action, notwithstanding the statement that was made this week. Meta recently sent a letter to the attorney general of California, urging him to prevent OpenAI from converting to a for-profit company. The letter stated that the move would be "wrong" and "could lead to a proliferation of similar start-up ventures that are notionally charitable until they are potentially profitable." This is in addition to the ongoing legal dispute that Meta has with Elon Musk.
