These are the elements that are found in the food chain. Here is a rundown of the manner in which they move:

1 The Flow of Energy​

Sunlight is the source of energy, and it is the producers (such as plants, algae, or organisms that make energy through photosynthesis) that bring it into the food chain. The process of photosynthesis is what these producers use to transform solar energy into chemical energy.

To obtain the energy that is stored in plants, primary consumers, also known as herbivores, devour producers.
Feeding on main consumers are secondary consumers, who can be either carnivores or omnivores.
In order to survive, tertiary consumers rely on secondary consumers.

Fungi and bacteria are examples of decomposers. They are responsible for the breakdown of dead species, which restores nutrients to the ecosystem.
The metabolic activities that occur at each step (or trophic level) result in the loss of energy in the form of heat, and only around ten percent of this energy is transferred to the subsequent level.

2 The Cycle of Nutrients​

The food web is a cycle that involves the circulation of nutrients such as carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus:

Carbon Cycle: In order to make organic compounds, producers take in carbon dioxide with their breath. The carbon is then taken in by consumers through the consumption of food, and it is returned to the atmosphere by decomposers through respiration and decomposition.
In the nitrogen cycle, plants are responsible for the uptake of nitrogen from the soil, which is subsequently transferred through the food chain when animals consume plants. A return of nitrogen to the soil is made by decomposers.

This nutrient travels via rocks, water, soil, and creatures before making its way back into the soil through the process of decomposition on its way back to the soil.
In ecosystems, food chains and webs are examples of how organisms are associated with one another. This interconnection ensures the passage of energy as well as crucial nutrients that are necessary for existence.
