After watching Beetlejuice 2, I was unimpressed.
It felt like a nostalgia-driven filler rather than a sequel. Actually, I never found the original funny either. The graphics matched the original's unique look, but the humor didn't work for me.
The second film relied too much on gross-out moments, which detracted from the darker comedy in the first. Due to its mostly female cast, the film had a "woke feminist Ghostbusters" feel. It wasn't as provocative as previous reboots, but it still seemed like the story was more about meeting expectations than creating something new.
Beetlejuice 2 seemed stuck between trying to recreate the first film's magic and not knowing where to go. It appeared stuck between the two. Winona Ryder's performance was the film's highlight, but it wasn't enough to rise above "just okay."
