Let's say that Spotify will no longer be available in the future.​


And until we meet again, all of you subscription services that are part of my diminutive empire.

Since quite some time ago, the day has been drawing near. It has been one week since I have terminated my subscription to Spotify Premium. This decision was made after I had eliminated the two social media sites that were still standing in my world: Facebook and LinkedIn.

I have a hunch that I will miss it about the same amount that I remember missing Netflix, which I stopped using in January of this year.

It's hard for me to pinpoint exactly what it was that resulted in me eventually pushing it over the edge of the cliff. It was my intention to reassure them in their exit form that I was not disappointed with the service they provided. After all, I had access to any and all that I could possibly desire in terms of music.

It wasn't the most recent increase in the amount of money paid out each month either; I had experienced increases like that in the past, and I believe that by this point, we have all come to the conclusion that it is just something that happens with these kinds of things.

The reason I felt so overwhelmed was not because of the business model, which demands me to buy into the illusion of the endlessness of information, just like many other social media and subscription-based applications do. This means that even if I devote twenty-four hours a day to it, I will never be able to finish it.

My decision was not made because I had finally come to my senses and taken a stance against the manner in which they compensate artists...
