An early preview is currently accessible for those who are considered "trusted testers."

This morning, Google introduced Gemini 2.0 to the public. The corporation claims that its new machine learning approach would offer more than just an improvement to the products and services it already offers. In addition to that, it will power whole new experiences. Project Mariner, an artificial intelligence agent that is capable of navigating within a web browser, was presented by Google at that period. Mariner is a Chrome plugin that is currently in the testing phase and is only accessible to a very small group of "trusted testers."

The pitch for Mariner is a tool that can automate some repetitive processes, as can be seen in the video that Google shared with the public. Mariner provides assistance to Jaclyn Konzelmann, who is employed by Google, in locating the contact information of four outside businesses during the demonstration.

It is quite clear that Google still has a lot of work to do before the software is ready for usage by the general public. During the prodding of Mariner, it is important to note that Konzelmann is very explicit, urging the agent to "memorize" and "remember" certain sections of her instructions. In addition, Mariner requires close to twelve minutes to finish the duty that has been assigned to it.

"As a research prototype, it is able to understand and reason across information in your browser screen, including pixels and web elements such as text, code, images, and forms," Google writes of Mariner. "It is able to do this regardless of the type of information being displayed."

In October, The Information published an article stating that Google was working on something dubbed Project Jarvis. If the name Project Mariner seems familiar to you, it is because of this article. The article referred to it as a "computer-using agent" that Google developed to provide assistance with activities such as booking flights. A preliminary version of Jarvis was made available on the Chrome Web Store for a limited time in the month of November. To confirm that Jarvis and Mariner are the same project, a person who is familiar with the situation provided confirmation.

Claude, the artificial intelligence developed by Anthropic, is able to "use a wide range of standard tools and software programs designed for people," according to the business. The confirmation of Mariner's existence comes after Anthropic recently revealed a function that is comparable to Mariner but more comprehensive. This tool is presently available in beta form for the general public.
