Mark Zuckerberg plans to lay off 5% more Meta employees

Over the previous few years, the corporation has eliminated more than 20,000 positions from its workforce.

Bloomberg reports that Meta is making preparations for even more layoffs than they have already implemented. The company's chief executive officer, Mark Zuckerberg, stated in a memo that he intends to lay off approximately five percent of its "low-performers."

"I've decided to raise the bar on performance management and move out low-performers faster," Zuckerberg stated in the memo. "I know this will be a challenge for me." "We typically manage out employees who aren't meeting expectations over the course of a year, but now we are going to do more extensive performance-based cuts during this cycle," the statement reads.

Taking into account the possibility of attrition, this could lead to a reduction of ten percent in the number of employees at Meta. According to Bloomberg, the future pink slips would be directed toward employees "who have been with the company for a sufficient amount of time to receive a performance rating."

It is possible that some 7,000 Meta employees may leave the company in the near future due to the combination of increased layoffs and attrition. This comes after a termination wave that started in the latter half of 2022 and finally affected more than 20,000 employees altogether. In addition, sixty technical program managers were terminated from their positions earlier this month.

"A more efficient organization will be able to carry out its most important tasks more quickly. In the year 2024, Zuckerberg made the following statement: "People will be more productive, and their work will be happier and more fulfilling." Having to live in continual fear of getting fired is the epitome of what it means to be "fun and fulfilling."

To this point, Meta has had an extraordinary year. Even though we are only halfway through the month of January, the Zuck has already put an end to third-party fact checking across all Meta platforms, added Dana White, CEO of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, to the board of Meta, and traveled to Mar-a-lago to make a kneeling ceremony. Additionally, the firm modified its "Hateful Content" policy in order to make it more secure for homophobes, and it was revealed that Instagram had been shadowbanning certain hashtags that are commonly used by LGBTQ people.

Substack now allows live video broadcasts by all publishers.

After several months of testing, the company is at last becoming available to the public.

In the previous year, Substack conducted a test of live video, which enabled the company's most popular users, known as Substack Bestsellers, to have the ability to broadcast video, communicate with a live audience, and even work together with other customers. At this time, the feature is available to any and all Substack publishers that are interested in going live. Having at least ten free subscribers is the only primary need, in addition to the requirement that you want to have an account.

As is the case with Twitch, publishers who go live have the ability to read comments as they are received. They also have the option of working together with other publishers by requesting that they join them on a call. In the present moment, Substack is only capable of supporting a maximum of three users on a single call.

Following the conclusion of your stream, you will receive a copy of the video-on-demand (VOD) as well as some notes that were developed by artificial intelligence. In order to ensure that readers and fans who were unable to watch the stream can watch it at their own leisure, the video-on-demand (VOD) can be posted as its own post. VODs are made available to the public by default when they are shared as a post; however, they can alternatively be protected by a paywall. If you want to promote your material in other places, the artificial intelligence of Substack may generate clips that you can share with users in order to entice them to watch the main video-on-demand file.

It has been reported by Substack that its Bestsellers are pleased with the functionality, which enables them to interact with their audience and readers in a more effective manner than in the past. Since many publishers have not yet experimented with live video on Substack, the full impact of live video on the platform is still unknown. The fact that there are so many different ways to stream live video in this day and age makes it extremely unlikely that it will become popular in this region.

Photoshop live co-editing is tested by Adobe

An analogous capability is already available for Adobe Express that it provides.

Photoshop is officially transitioning into a collaborative endeavor. Adobe has recently made an announcement on the development of live co-editing on Photoshop. This feature of Photoshop enables multiple users to simultaneously collaborate on the same file from separate machines. In the event that you are tired of waiting around for a document to be returned, then this is probably excellent news; but, if you are only interested in sharing the end product, then you might not want to inform your supervisor about it.

Adobe offers a wide variety of applications for live co-editing in Photoshop, including working together with other designers, enabling clients to directly edit and comment on a document, and enabling students to follow along with a teacher's instruction. To be fair, if I had that option available to me during my Photoshop class at college, it could have helped me improve my design skills.

Currently, live co-editing is only accessible in beta testing; however, the company does offer a tool that is comparable to this one in Adobe Express. The feature is not yet totally finalized. If you are interested in checking it out for yourself, you can sign up to be a member of the beta testing group by clicking on this link. There are also other options available, such as competitors such as Canva, which already provides real-time collaboration.

UK investigates Google's search methods for antitrust

It comes after investigations of a similar nature were conducted in the United States of America, Japan, and the European Union.

Following in the footsteps of countries such as Japan, the United States of America, and the European Union, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) of the United Kingdom has initiated an antitrust inquiry into the companies that provide search services for Google. This is the first investigation that the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has conducted in accordance with the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers (DMCC) Act, which became operational on January 1, 2025. In a recent announcement, the regulatory authority stated that it will initiate two separate investigations this month specifically.

The examination that will be conducted by the CMA will look into whether or not Google is stifling innovation from outside sources, giving preference to its own services, and collecting or utilizing data without the agreement of its users. "With more than 200,000 UK businesses advertising there, Google's search and advertising services are relied upon by millions of people and businesses across the United Kingdom," said Sarah Cardell, Chief Executive of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), in a press release. "Google's platform is responsible for 90 percent of all searches that take place on the internet." "That’s why it’s so important to ensure these services are delivering good outcomes for people and businesses and that there is a level playing field, especially as AI has the potential to transform search services."

By virtue of the DMCC Act, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is granted the authority to designate particular businesses with "Strategic Market Status" (SMS) in relation to a particular digital activity, specifically Google's search and search advertising services. Companies must have a global turnover of at least 25 million pounds or one billion pounds in the United Kingdom.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is able to enforce pro-competition guidelines and have greater regulatory power over certain services thanks to this label. For instance, if the CMA were to assign an SMS classification to Google's search and search advertising services, the business might be compelled to make the data it collects accessible to rivals or to grant publishers a greater degree of control over how Google uses the data it collects. It is possible that the inquiry will take up to nine months to complete, and the CMA is requesting observations from anyone who is interested until February 3rd.

Previous probes of Google's search engine have been met with resistance from the company. On the other hand, in December, the company disclosed that it was considering making modifications to its search services in the United States in response to a request from the Department of Justice that it sell off Chrome.

Chinese social media app RedNote leads as TikTok gets banned.

There are a number of apps that are not widely known that have been pushed to the top of the rankings in the app store.

Users of the TikTok app are driving several apps that were previously unknown to the top of the charts in the Apple and Google app stores. This is because TikTok is likely to be banned in the United States over the next few days. To this point, the app that appears to have benefited the most is a Chinese social media application known as "RedNote" or Xiaohongshu, which literally translates to "little red book."

Although it is presently ranked 34th in Google's Play Store, the app that is similar to TikTok and is used for short-form video is currently the most popular app in Apple's App Store. As a result of the fact that numerous TikTok producers have started tweeting about their experiences using the Chinese app, RedNote has been gaining popularity significantly. While this is going on, a number of producers have posted videos on RedNote in which they discuss how they are inviting "TikTok refugees" to the service.

The app is designed in a manner that is quite similar to that of TikTok, and it gives you the ability to browse vertically through feeds of short-form films that are based on your preferences. There are several helpful videos on TikTok that explain how to change the language of the app to English. However, the majority of the program's UI is in Chinese, which can make it a little bit difficult to navigate.

Although it may appear as though RedNote has emerged out of nowhere, the app has been extremely popular in China for many years. According to a report by CNBC, the app, which has been around for more than a decade, is considered to be a competitor to ByteDance's Douyin and the e-commerce giant Alibaba, which has over 300 million users.

The software RedNote is not the only one that has been boosted by users who are apprehensive about TikTok. Lemon8 is another ByteDance app that is now popular in both the Apple and Google app stores, where it is currently ranked in the second and first place, respectively. However, despite the fact that TikTok has occasionally helped to boost the app, Lemon8 is much more likely to suffer the same fate as TikTok in the event that the Supreme Court decides to agree with the Biden Administration, which is highly likely.

Flip is yet another video app that is now popular in both app stores. Flip promotes itself as "where social meets shopping," and it is experiencing a lot of success. As well as an in-app storefront, the app, which was developed by Humans, Inc. and is based in Los Angeles, includes short-form videos. At the moment, it is ranked number fourteen in Google's store, and it is ranked number four in Apple's store. According to Crunchbase, the whole value of the company was greater than one billion dollars in the previous year.

Another application that appears to have benefited from the impending ban on TikTok is a program known as "ReelShort." Although the name of the app appears to be a pun on Instagram's reels and YouTube Shorts, both of which are well-established TikTok clones, the app appears to be less of a TikTok clone and more of a streaming platform that is aspiring to be like TikTok. A number of longer "movies" with weird titles, such as "The Heiress Blacklisted her Husband" and "In Love with the Alpha," are divided into bite-sized segments that are included in the application. At the moment, ReelShort has the seventh spot in the App Store and the second spot in Google Play.

Despite the fact that it is highly improbable that any of these applications will continue to be popular for an extended period of time, the fact that a large number of relatively unknown apps have risen to the top of the app stores in such a short amount of time is yet another indication of how influential TikTok's users and producers can be. This demonstrates that simply prohibiting TikTok will not be sufficient to limit the influence of Chinese technology businesses in the United States.

Meta admits removing Pixelfed links

For a limited period of time, sharing the alternative to Instagram was considered "spam."

According to users on Bluesky and 404 Media, Meta appeared to be restricting links to Pixelfed, a decentralized photo-sharing site, on Facebook. Pixelfed is a platform that allows users to share photos. Using Facebook's "Community Standards on spam" as a justification, a small set of postings that linked to "pixelfed.social" were removed from the platform.

A representative from Meta responded to a request for comment by stating that the removal of the posts was an error and that they will be reinstated.

A member of the larger "fediverse" of decentralized posting platforms, Pixelfed is powered by the ActivityPub protocol and operates as a part of the platform. When it comes to the capacity to share, like, and comment on photographs, it performs quite similarly to Instagram. However, due to the fact that it is hosted on ActivityPub, your postings may appear in other applications or be ported to completely alternative approaches to photo sharing if you so desire. In the process of gradually incorporating aspects of ActivityPub into Threads, Meta is making it feasible to post to both Threads and Mastodon at the same time, for instance.

The timing of these deletions is sufficient to raise suspicions in the minds of almost anyone. In a recent announcement, Meta made some significant adjustments to the way it intends to control speech on its many platforms. During the past week, the corporation made the decision to amend its policy against hateful conduct and to terminate its third-party fact checking program. According to the information that Wired was able to unearth, the company's rules are currently being loosened, which means that communication that would be considered hateful under any normal circumstance is now permitted.

The platform did share on Saturday that it was "seeing unprecedented levels of traffic to pixelfed.social." It is not unrealistic to suppose that people could contemplate switching to an alternate application such as Pixelfed as a response to this. It is therefore not implausible to suppose that the new Meta, which has a tendency toward the right, would block its competitors in advance, much as X did with links to Mastodon and Substack.
