Genki showed off fake designs at CES in January... before they even told us about the console.
Nintendo is taking on the company that showed off fake versions of the not-yet-revealed Switch 2 at CES 2025. On Friday, they filed a lawsuit against Genki, the accessory maker, for trademark infringement, unfair competition, and false advertising. They claim Genki tried to gain from the buzz around Nintendo's upcoming console. Nintendo says Genki pushed accessories it said would work with the Switch 2, without having the console, using the Switch logo.
In January, reports came that Genki brought Switch 2 fakes to CES and posted a video of a 3D render of it. Nintendo then said, through IGN, that neither the hardware nor the images were official. Genki first claimed to have a Switch 2 but later said on X they don’t have a black market console and told Game*Spark, through Automaton, their mockups were just based on leaks. Nintendo thinks Genki’s words were mixed up but they kept telling buyers their products would work with the Switch 2 when it comes out.
Nintendo told us about the Switch 2 on January 16, just after CES. But Genki kept using the hype to try and outsell Nintendo’s own stuff, even hosting a "Genki Direct" right after Nintendo Direct. After the lawsuit was filed, Genki shared on X that they’re serious about it and working on a careful response.
Here's what Genki said: We're on our own, making cool gaming gear for the fans we cherish. We're proud of what we've made and stand by our products' quality and uniqueness. Details are scarce, but we’re getting ready to fill orders and show off new stuff at PAX East this week.
After long waits and lots of guesswork, the Nintendo Switch 2 is finally coming. The lawsuit mentions Nintendo started on this next-gen console right after the first one came out. Pre-orders started in April, and it hits the shelves on June 5.
