There are posts on Reddit that are being removed that link to the manifesto of the person who is suspected of shooting United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The corporation claims that it is enforcing a regulation that has been in place for a long time, but due to its activities, some people have become angry and disappointed.
Since New York police initially released photographs of the person they believe to be responsible for the murder, Luigi Mangione, who is 26 years old and was arrested and charged with murder earlier this week, has been the topic of great intrigue on the internet. On Tuesday, writer Ken Klippenstein received the manifesto in its entirety and released it on his Substack platform. The New York Times published small sections of the manifesto, which was 261 words long. The links to Klippenstein's newsletter that contained the manifesto started to disappear off of Reddit. Some of the links were removed by the community moderators of various subreddits, while others were removed by the staff of Reddit.
Reddit had directed them to erase posts of the manifesto, according to a moderator who explained the situation in a post that was widely watched on the subreddit known as r/popculturechat. A moderator by the name of clemthearcher said, "Reddit has officially informed us that we are required to strictly adhere to their site-wide rules regarding violent content." To be more specific, Reddit has informed us that we are not permitted to post Luigi Mangione's manifesto, even if it is reported in a neutral manner.
Reddit banned a post that linked to the manifesto in the subreddit r/interestingasfuck. The post received approximately 20,000 upvotes, and it was later discussed in a lengthy post in the forum r/subredditdrama. Other subreddits, such as r/witchesVsPatriarchy and r/antiwork, also had their posts banned from their respective communities. It has been confirmed by Indiasocialbook that the website will now automatically block user postings that seek to link to the Substack post that contains the manifesto.
The firm claims that the move is not a new policy, despite the fact that it has offended a great number of Redditors. A representative from Reddit has stated that "manifestos related to violent acts" are in violation of the company's guidelines against violent material, which specify the following:
Not only should you refrain from posting anything that praises or supports the mistreatment of animals, but you should also avoid posting content that incites or calls for aggression or bodily damage against an individual (including yourself) or a group of individuals. In addition, the policy notes that posts that "contain manifestos or imagery of their violence" are an example of content that violates the policy. However, it is important to note that Magione has not been charged of committing mass murder. It has been confirmed by a spokeswoman for Reddit that users are allowed to discuss the manifesto, including press coverage of it, so long as they do not breach any other principles that are outlined by the website.
Reddit's actions come at a time when many online critics have voiced sympathy for Mangione, who has become something of a "folk hero" in certain parts of the internet. While it is not unusual for users of social media platforms to accuse a firm of "censorship" in the midst of disagreements over content moderation, Reddit's actions make this accusation particularly noteworthy. As a result of his acts, the American healthcare system has been subjected to an increased level of scrutiny. This is because many have described their encounters with insurance company denials in the aftermath of the massacre.
"I'm sure Reddit's admins find themselves far more aligned with the class of people like Brian Johnson (sic) than they do with the rest of us," one commenter wrote in response to a post made by moderator clemthearcher in the subreddit popular culture chat. "so the only violence they care to moderate is that against Brian Johnson (sic) - not misogyny, racism, homophobia, or the rampant greed of our healthcare industry, which has resulted in the death or suffering of hundreds of thousands of people," the commenter said.
