ChatGPT's Deep Research tool generates information from hundreds of web sources

This definitely sounds like something I've heard before.

There is little doubt that OpenAI has developed a fresh sense of urgency. On Sunday evening, just two days after the o3-mini was made available to the public, the business made an unexpected revelation about Deep Research. ChatGPT's new function enables it to locate, evaluate, and combine information from hundreds of websites and online sources in order to generate reports that are comparable to those produced by a research analyst.

In addition to the standard text inquiries, users can upload files, such as PDFs and spreadsheets, when they prompt ChatGPT in this manner. After that, the chatbot will take "anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes" to put together a response, and a side panel will keep track of the agent's progress and citations while it is working. OpenAI states that the new capability "accomplishes in tens of minutes what would take a human many hours."

Mark Chen, the chief research officer of OpenAI, stated during the company's reveal livestream, "Our ultimate aspiration is a model that can uncover and discover new knowledge for itself." "It is a fundamental part of our [artificial general intelligence] plan."

According to OpenAI, ChatGPT has several limitations. For example, it can sometimes make false inferences or hallucinate facts when undertaking Deep Research. However, it does so "at a notably lower" rate than other contemporary models. Furthermore, the agent may occasionally have difficulty distinguishing between credible facts and rumors. Some users may also notice that there are formatting problems. The business states, "We anticipate that all of these problems will improve quickly with increased usage and time."

If any of this seems familiar to you, it is because Google's Advanced suite has its own Deep Research component. This feature not only has the same name, but it also has a similar range of capabilities. The $20 per month One AI Premium package from Google provides access to Gemini Advanced, which is one of the major differences between the two. On the other hand, if you want to use OpenAI's version of Deep Research today, you will have to pay $200 a month for a ChatGPT Pro membership.

The company explains, "Deep research in ChatGPT is currently very compute intensive," and adds that Pro customers would be limited to 100 inquiries each month. "The longer it takes to research a query, the more inference compute is needed."

According to OpenAI, the company is developing a version of Deep Research that is powered by a smaller and more affordable model. As a result, the corporation will be able to provide "significantly higher rate limits." In the meanwhile, OpenAI is hoping to make the tool available to Plus users "in about a month," after conducting a round of safety testing. European users will have to wait to try out the tool for themselves, just like they have had to do with most of the company's other recent releases. Deep Research is not yet available to anyone in the UK, Switzerland, or the broader European economic zone.

Samsung leader acquitted of fraud following appeal

For more than eight years, Executive Chairman Jay Y. Lee has been dealing with legal problems.

According to Bloomberg, Jay Y. Lee, the executive chairman of Samsung, has been found not guilty of criminal charges by the second-highest court in South Korea. The Seoul High Court confirmed its earlier ruling on Monday, which found Lee not guilty of stock manipulation and accounting fraud charges related to a merger that took place in 2015. Lee will be able to concentrate on Samsung's mobile and semiconductor businesses, which have experienced a decrease in profitability over the last few years, thanks to the verdict. Yee has always maintained that he has never committed any crimes.

According to analysts, the prosecution still has the option to appeal to Korea's Supreme Court, but it is improbable that they would win because they would not be able to offer any fresh reasons. Samsung lawyer Kim You Jin stated, "The investigation and trial of this case has taken an extremely long time." "We hope that the defendants can now concentrate on their work after this verdict."

In 2017, Lee was accused by prosecutors of manipulating the share price of two Samsung subsidiaries in order to make it easier for him to merge the companies and consolidate his authority. However, in early 2024, the court decided that the prosecution did not provide sufficient evidence to support that claim. A court observed in the verdict, "It is hard to say that Lee Jae-yong [aka Jay Y. Lee]... spearheaded the merger, and that the merger was done just for the sake of Lee's succession."

Business groups praised the decision at the time, but not everyone in the country was in agreement. In February 2024, Park Ju-geun, who is the head of the corporate think group Leaders Index, told The Financial Times, "The ruling will free Lee of legal risks, but I am at a loss for words in terms of the country’s economic justice." "This is completely contrary to all previous court decisions regarding the merger."

Lee was sentenced to five years in prison in 2017 after being found guilty of bribing public officials in connection with the same merger. However, the Supreme Court later overturned that verdict and ordered the case to be retried. Lee was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in early 2021 during the retrial. He was released on parole six months later. Park Geun-hye, the former president of Korea, was also imprisoned for her involvement in the same incident. In 2022, Lee was pardoned by Yoon Suk Yeol, the president of South Korea at the time. Yoon was just impeached and charged with rebellion for attempting to impose martial law.

Uber wants to make service animal journeys easier

You have the option to inform drivers ahead of time about your partner.

On Monday, Uber introduced a new set of services that may help to make things easier for customers who have service animals. The firm now allows handlers to immediately inform drivers that they are traveling with a service animal.

Chris Yoon, an Uber Product Manager, stated in a blog post that he "joined Uber with a singular mission: to help expand accessibility in rideshare, including for those who rely on service animals." He claims that he and other blind passengers frequently send messages to drivers ahead of time to inform them that they will be traveling with service animals. If they choose, they can use today's new features to automate that for them.

Drivers who are thinking about declining rides will have to reconsider their decision, and then reconsider it again. If the driver asks to terminate the ride after finding out that there is a service animal, Uber will instantly issue a reminder in the app that doing so is against company policy and the law. According to Uber, drivers who refuse to transport passengers with service animals "may permanently lose access to the platform."

Passengers who choose to use the new features will automatically get a message once a driver cancels. The message will ask what happened and offer further assistance. People who do not use the feature can get in touch with the company by calling or through the app.

Riders can use the Uber app to set up the function. Select Service Animal by going to Account, then Settings, and then Accessibility. After that, you will be asked to complete an eligibility form and select the specific components of the feature (such as warning the driver in advance) that you would like to activate.

Starlink contract uncanceled by Ontario after trade war truce

Elon Musk has been accused by Premier Doug Ford of wanting to "take food off the table" of the people in his country.

Update, February 3, 5:30 PM ET: After Prime Minister Trudeau and President Trump declared that they will put their tariff stalemate on hold for thirty days, Ontario Premier Ford made a similar announcement on X. Ford stated that the government would also be halting the cancellation of its Starlink contract.

"Ontario will also suspend our retaliatory measures now that the United States has paused tariffs." If President Trump goes forward with the tariffs, we will not hesitate to take American items off the shelves of the LCBO or to prevent American companies from being able to sell their products to the province.

Ford also stated that the together States and Canada "need to remain united and focused on the real trade war we’re fighting, with China."

The unedited version of the original story, which was titled "Ontario cancels $100 million Starlink contract as a response to those tariffs," is as follows:

Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario and a former strong admirer of President Trump, has declared that the Canadian province will be "ripping up" a $100 million deal with Elon Musk's Starlink. Starlink was given the responsibility of providing internet access to distant areas of the province when the contract was inked in November of the previous year.

This follows Trump's announcement of a 25 percent tax on almost all items imported from Canada. As a result, Canada declared that it will impose a 25 percent tariff on goods imported from the United States. It seems like we are about to enter a trade war for, um, reasons? Trump claims that fentanyl is the issue, even though fewer than one percent of the narcotic comes into the United States through Canada. This information has been verified by both the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

So how do Musk and Starlink fit into this? The wealthiest billionaire in the world is a close friend of Trump and is now in charge of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is a division inside the government that is responsible for reducing costs and deregulating. Musk, who is not an elected official and is essentially just a regular person, has access to the federal payment system and some of the levers of the US Treasury.

Ford believes that this is sufficient evidence to connect Musk to Trump's tariffs. He stated that Ontario "won't do business with people hellbent on destroying our economy" and that Musk wants to "take food off the table" of hardworking Canadians. The premier stated that the contract will not be valid until "US tariffs are removed." Furthermore, Ontario is prohibiting all American corporations from obtaining provincial contracts. This will result in domestic businesses missing out on tens of billions of dollars in new revenue.

Ford also ordered the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) to take American-made alcohol off the shelves of its stores. He is working on this with a number of other premiers from throughout the country.

The LCBO sells around $1 billion worth of American wine, beer, spirits, and seltzers every year. He said in a statement, "Not anymore." Ontario is home to more than 16 million people and includes cities such as Toronto and Niagara Falls. Musk posted "oh well" on X in response to Ford's decision.

Apple is ‘deeply concerned’ over AltStore ‘porn app’

The third-party store referred to Hot Tub as the "first Apple-approved porn app."

Earlier today, AltStore PAL, a third-party app shop, stated that a porn app called Hot Tub was now available to iOS customers in the European Union. The marketplace, which allows consumers in the EU to sideload programs that are not available in Apple's App Store, referred to it as the "first Apple-approved porn app."

Apple has now expressed that it is "deeply concerned" about Hot Tub, which, as TechCrunch pointed out, is the first time that a porn software has been released directly for the iPhone. An Apple spokeswoman stated, "We are very worried about the dangers that hardcore porn apps like this one pose to users in the EU, particularly children." "This app and similar ones will weaken consumer trust and confidence in our ecosystem, which we have spent over ten years building to be the best in the world." We would never provide this app in our App Store, and we certainly do not approve of it, despite what the marketplace developer falsely claims.

Apple has made it clear that its guidelines for notarization indicate that app developers should not "suggest or imply that Apple is a source or supplier of the App, or that Apple endorses any particular representation regarding quality or functionality." The claims made by AltStore appear to contradict such instruction.

However, Riley Testut, the creator of AltStore, denied making "any false statements" in a statement to Indiasocialbook. He states that Hot Tub "was submitted to Apple’s own notarization process where it was then approved by Apple employees for distribution with alternative app marketplaces such as AltStore PAL." He stated that it was this approval that AltStore was referring to in its advertising. He continued, "The DMA also does not require that Apple approves apps for distribution; they have chosen to do so themselves," referring to the Digital Markets Act of the European Union.

Apple has been quite open about its displeasure with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which mandates that the company permit third-party app stores in Europe. In its statement about Hot Tub on Monday, the business said, "The truth is that we are required by the European Commission to allow it to be distributed by marketplace operators like AltStore and Epic who may not share our concerns for user safety."

Epic, the company that makes Fortnite and has been a long-time rival of Apple, has revealed intentions to add third-party mobile games to its Epic Games app in the EU. This is in addition to AltStore. Epic granted AltStore Pal a "MegaGrant" last year to assist fund the "core technology fees" that third-party app stores are obligated to pay Apple. Even though they are not formally related, this grant was given to help support the alternative app store.
