Many of Meta's websites and applications were unavailable for several hours.
Following significant "technical issues" that brought down many of Meta's most popular applications for several hours on Wednesday, some of those applications, including Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Messenger, are back online. In an update posted on X, the firm stated, "We're 99% of the way there - just doing some last checks," which was written about four hours after the company had acknowledged the loss of service.
The company did not provide any additional information regarding the origin of the problem or the potential time frame for the difficulties to be completely rectified. The status dashboard for Meta still displayed some "major disruptions" to its business and transparency tools as of Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Pacific Time (PT), despite the fact that other services were marked as "resolved" or "recovering." However, it appears that Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads, and Messenger have all made significant progress in their recovery.
Earlier in the day, there were over 90,000 reports of problems for Facebook.com alone on Downdetector. Users from X and Bluesky stated that they were having trouble loading and utilizing Meta's applications. Even Meta's corporate website displayed the message "This page isn't available right now" for a period of time. Following the initial attempt by Indiasocialbook to obtain a comment from Meta, the firm referred to a brief statement that was published on X in which it acknowledged that "a technical issue is impacting some users' ability to access our apps."
In March of 2024, Meta experienced its most recent big outage, which lasted for two hours and prohibited users from accessing its many applications and services. The "technical issue" was the explanation that the head of communications at Meta, Andy Stone, provided for that outage. This is the same explanation that Meta has provided up until this point today.
On the 11th of December, 2024, at 4:50 p.m. Eastern: Additional information regarding the duration of the outage and its impact on Meta enterprise products has been added.
At 7:50 p.m. Eastern Time on December 11th, 2024:: In addition, Meta has provided some more comments regarding the current state of the outage.
