The Chief Executive Officer of Tesla desired that OpenAI transform into a for-profit business on his own terms.
For the purpose of demonstrating that Elon Musk's injunction to prohibit OpenAI from changing into a for-profit firm is in direct opposition to what he desired in 2017, OpenAI provided receipts in the form of a lengthy timeline consisting of emails, messages, and court filings. In essence, OpenAI is giving additional evidence to support the assertion that its former co-founder desired for the artificial intelligence startup to transform into a for-profit business and for him to be appointed CEO.
In 2017, Musk and OpenAI came to an understanding that the then-non-profit organization needed to become a for-profit organization in order to "advance its mission" and seemingly capitalize on the public interest earned from its artificial intelligence beating professional Dota 2 players in one-on-one matches. You should read the entire blog in order to get all of the details (and get a sense of how billionaires email), but the main point remains that in 2017, Musk and OpenAI came to this conclusion. OpenAI asserts that Musk proposed a new board structure in which he "would unequivocally have initial control of the company." OpenAI was concerned about this proposal and expressed its opposition to it. The conflicts that ensued between Musk and the leadership of OpenAI ultimately resulted in Musk's departure from the board of directors of the nonprofit organization in 2018. In the year 2023, Musk launched xAI, an artificial intelligence business that is a direct competitor to OpenAI.
The goal that OpenAI is attempting to accomplish here is rather obvious. Musk initially filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in March 2024, due to the company's interactions with Microsoft, which he believed breached the company's position as a non-profit organization. Shortly after OpenAI released a blog with emails that revealed Musk wanted OpenAI to either merge with Tesla or make him CEO, he decided to withdraw the lawsuit. The new blog that OpenAI has launched elaborates on all of those particulars by adding additional content and appears to be designed to accomplish a similar effect.
