There are allegations that the Chinese smartphone manufacturer has engaged in the unlawful employment of Taiwanese engineers.
In response to charges that OnePlus CEO Pete Lau illegally employed people in Taiwan, Taiwanese authorities have issued a warrant for Lau's arrest. Two Taiwanese nationals who were employed by Lau have also been charged with criminal offenses. The smartphone manufacturer based in China has been accused of engaging in unlawful recruitment of more than seventy engineers from Taiwan by the company.Members of the Shilin District Prosecutors Office assert that OnePlus allegedly established a shell corporation in Hong Kong with a unique name, and then formed a branch in Taiwan in 2015 without obtaining approval from the government. According to reports, the department was responsible for doing research and development for OnePlus mobile phones. It is the contention of Taiwanese authorities that the measures taken by OnePlus constitute a violation of the Cross-Strait Act, which serves as a framework for the relationship between Taiwan and the Chinese mainland. At least one of the clauses of the act stipulates that in order for Chinese businesses to employ Taiwanese labor, they must first acquire authorization from the government of Taiwan.
