The iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max are the only devices equipped with this feature.

The layering functionality that was promised for the Voice Memos app that was demonstrated at the iPhone event in September has just been added to the app from Apple. Because of this, users are able to add a new track on top of an existing track, which transforms the application into a recording tool that is incredibly limited but nonetheless helpful. This upgrade is included in iOS 18.2, which also includes other artificial intelligence (AI) gimmicks, such as a bespoke emoji creator.

Now, there is a significant caveat to this. There is a software modification for Voice Memos that is only available for the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max. In spite of the fact that track layering is not exactly a rocket science, this is a disappointing development; yet, the business claims that there is a valid reason to exclude other models.

It is feasible for individuals to add that second layer without wearing headphones thanks to some computational wizardry, the A18 Pro chip, and those new "studio-quality" microphones that come with the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The software allows people to do this. Although it is a fairly cool trick, you should note that it is not exactly required. I don't mind putting on headphones for a brief period of time.

In addition, the update has the capability to separate the voice memo into its two composite tracks, which can then be utilized in the future using reliable recording software. That is yet another cool little trick, and it is somewhat comparable to what The Beatles performed for their most recent (and final) song. As can be seen in the video below, singer Michael Bublé and country sensation Carly Pearce collaborated on a Christmas song using the Voice Memos app.

Apple iCloud will allow the files to be synchronized across all of the devices, just like it does with everything else that is recorded using Voice Memos. In addition, these multi-layered recordings will be accessible on Mac computers, where they may be dragged and dropped into a session using Logic Project.
