An easy way to delete your account completely
If you are tired of Netflix and want to cancel your subscription, it is easy to do so. You can cancel your membership in a few steps depending on how you subscribed. Netflix allows you to easily upgrade or downgrade your plan in addition to canceling it altogether. Here, we guide you through how to cancel Netflix, switch your plan and everything you need to know before making any changes.
How to cancel Netflix subscription
It’s fairly straightforward to cancel Netflix, but how you do so depends on your subscription. If you subscribed directly through Netflix, you can cancel on the website or the mobile app. If you subscribed through Apple, Google or a cable provider, however, the process will be slightly different.
Cancel Netflix in the web
If you have signed up through Netflix.com, here are the steps to cancel your subscription from a desktop or mobile browser:
1. Sign in to Netflix.com.
2. Click your profile icon in the top-right corner and choose Account from the dropdown menu.
3. Scroll down to the Membership & Billing section of the page.
4. Select the Cancel Membership button.
5. To finalize the process, click Finish Cancellation.
Once you have canceled, your account will remain active until the end of your current billing cycle. Your viewing activity and preferences are saved by Netflix for up to 10 months in case you reactivate your account.
Cancel Netflix on the app
You can also cancel your membership from the Netflix app on Android or iOS (the steps are the same for both):
1. Open the Netflix app and tap your profile icon in the top-right corner.
2. From the dropdown menu, select Account. This will open a web browser window.
3. Follow the same steps as above from the web to cancel it.
While accessing through a mobile app, it simply redirects one to the account page based on the browser and therefore the steps remain the same.
How to cancel Netflix through a third party service
If you are billed through a third party, such as Apple, Google, Amazon, or a TV provider, the process is different. You must cancel your subscription through their billing system.
To find out who is billing you:
Go to your Netflix Account page.
Check Membership & Billing. If you see “Billed through Apple” or another third party, you must cancel through them.
Here’s how to cancel with some of the most common providers:
Apple (iPhone/iPad)
1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings.
2. Tap on your name at the top, then select Subscriptions.
3. Find Netflix in the list and tap on it.
4. Tap Cancel Subscription.
Google Play
1. Open the Google Play Store app.
2. Tap on your profile icon in the top-right corner, then select Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions.
3. From the list, find Netflix and tap on it.
4. Select Cancel subscription.
Amazon
1. Go to Amazon's Memberships & Subscriptions page.
2. Find Netflix in your list of subscriptions.
3. Click Manage Subscription and select Cancel Channel or Cancel Subscription.
Cable or mobile provider
If Netflix is part of your cable package (e.g., Comcast/Xfinity, Verizon or T-Mobile), you will need to cancel it through their app, website, or customer service. Please note that each provider has its own cancellation process, so you should check your account or contact their customer service for help.
What happens after you cancel your Netflix subscription
Once you cancel your Netflix account, it will remain active until the end of your current billing period — you will not be charged again unless you choose to restart your membership. Your profile details, viewing history, My List, and settings will be saved by Netflix for 10 months after cancellation. This means that you can pick up right where you left off if you decide to resume within that period.
If you are on the Netflix DVD plan, which is only available in the US, you must cancel it separately from your streaming subscription. You can do so under the DVD Plan section of your Account page.
How to change your Netflix plan
If you don’t want to cancel Netflix altogether, you have the option to switch to a lower-priced plan. Netflix offers a variety of different plans with varying features and price ranges. The available plans in the US as of early 2025 are as follows:
Standard with ads ($7.99/month): 1080p, ad-supported content, watch on 2 screens at a time
Standard ($17.99/month): 1080p, ad-free, two simultaneous streams, option to add extra members
Premium ($24.99/month): 4K UHD + HDR, four simultaneous streams, supports spatial audio and more download devices
Follow these steps to change your plan:
1. Go to Netflix.com and login.
2. Hover over your profile icon and select Account.
3. Click on Change Plan under Plan Details.
4. Choose your desired plan and click on Continue.
5. Confirm the change.
Your plan will change immediately. If you upgrade, you’ll be charged a prorated amount for the remaining days of your current billing period. If you downgrade, your change will take effect at the beginning of your next billing cycle.
How to delete your Netflix account permanently
If you want to cut ties with Netflix entirely, you can completely delete your account. This process will take a bit longer and will involve some email correspondence.
1. Navigate to Account > Security.
2. Click Delete Account.
3. Perform the security check.
4. From the available options, select Permanently Delete. Netflix will send a confirmation email.
Things to keep in mind
Before you can cancel or change your Netflix subscription, it is important to note the following:
Shared accounts: If you’re not the main account holder, you can’t cancel the subscription yourself (only the account holder can do that) — but you can remove your access by removing yourself from the account.
Downloaded content: Any downloaded content will be gone once your subscription ends.
Reactivation: Your membership can be reactivated at any time by going to your Account page and clicking Restart Membership.
Billing date: Your Netflix account page will show you the exact date you will be billed on. If you want to avoid being charged for another month, make sure to cancel your account before that date.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pause my Netflix subscription?
Yes, Netflix allows you to pause your membership, but only for one month. During this time, you can still watch your favorite content until the end of the current billing period. You will not be charged for the next billing period, and will be unable to access content while the pause is in effect.
At the end of your one-month pause, your membership will automatically resume and you will be charged for the next period. You can choose to “Pause for a month” via the “Cancel Membership” option in your Netflix account settings, and can repeat the process two more times (for a total pause period of three months at a time). However, if you prefer to take a longer break from the service, you may be better off cancelling your membership instead.
Will I receive a refund for cancelling early?
Netflix does not offer partial refunds. You will have access until the end of the month you’ve paid for.
What if I don’t see the Cancel button?
If there is no Cancel Membership button on your account page, you are likely being billed through a third party. Instead, you should follow the provider’s cancellation process.
