The Trump administration said it wants to cut Energy Star

The Trump government is getting ready to end Energy Star, according to the Washington Post. The announcement was made at a meeting of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Atmospheric Protection, during which the department was also eliminated.

The program began during the first Bush administration in 1992. This is the unit behind those yellow stickers on home appliances. The long-standing public-private partnership verifies energy-saving appliances and offers consumers rebates for purchasing them.

Data suggests that in the past 33 years, the program has saved Americans more than $500 billion in energy bills. It says that the average person can save about $450 on energy bills per year by choosing appliances that have the Energy Star certification.

The EPA has not said when this would go into effect or when consumers would stop seeing Energy Star certifications on home appliances. It's technically illegal for a president to end this program without Congress, but the same goes for many of Trump's pronouncements and executive orders.

"Eliminating the Energy Star program would directly contravene this administration's commitment to reduce residential energy expenditures," Paula Glover, president of the nonprofit coalition Alliance to Save Energy, told CNN. "For only $32 million a year, Energy Star supports American families in saving over $40 billion on energy use annually. This equates to a $350 return on investment for every dollar of federal funds used."

Microsoft releases helper for AI-enabled settings in new computers with Copilot+

Click and Windows 11 get AI improvements.

Microsoft announces new features for Copilot+ PCs and Windows 11. An upcoming enhancement for Copilot+ PCs that we found interesting is the “agent”. This tool offers AI assistance on-device for tweaking a PC’s settings. Among the use cases for this agent that Microsoft provided are “how to control my PC by voice” and “my mouse pointer is too small.”

Not only does the agent handle these types of questions, it can also make changes for a user if the right permissions are given. Beyond that, the blog post makes clear that only English language questions are “initially” supported — suggesting there will be more languages later. This feature will be initially available on Copilot+ PCs powered by Snapdragon chips, with Intel and AMD computers getting agents “soon.”

Additionally, Microsoft is expanding the Click to Do capability for Copilot AI assistance. This allows Copilot to act on whatever is currently in focus on a computer screen. This includes working with text or an image, for example making a bulleted list out of selected text or drafting copy inside Microsoft Word. The new features also provide additional actions for scheduling meetings, sending a message to Microsoft Teams and sending data to Microsoft Excel. Click to Do will also allow users to invoke the Reading Coach and Immersive Reader modes on a computer.

Most of Microsoft’s recent Windows 11 messaging has been about Copilot+ PCs, but there are some new things for owners of other devices coming too. For instance, users will be able to customize the Start menu and use AI-powered features from File Explorer. Copilot is also getting support for screen sharing through the Copilot Vision on Windows feature.

OpenAI is now a for-profit company and the implications are not yet understood for their nonprofit arm

Power is everything.

OpenAI has put an end to its controversial reorganization plan, and now its efforts are being put into the creation of new technologies. The company stated that it will no longer try to separate its for-profit arm from the nonprofit board that currently oversees it. "After speaking with civic leaders and following a productive conversation with the Offices of the Attorneys General of Delaware and California, we decided that the organization shouldn't split off the for-profit," said Bret Taylor, the chairman of OpenAI.

OpenAI had previously said that its present structure would not allow a nonprofit to “effectively do much more than control the for-profit.” The fact that it would need more money was made even more apparent by the company’s need for additional funds two months after accumulating $6.6 billion in new investments. In a December blog post, the company mentioned that they would require “funding beyond our own expectations” and that if investors wanted to support us, they needed traditional equity at this scale of capital as opposed to customized structures.

Under the previous plan, the nonprofit would retain total control of the for-profit entity, which would have given it whatever control came with the amount of stock it received in the reorganization process.

This part of OpenAI’s proposal has fueled the controversy around it, with many—former employees as well as labor and nonprofit groups, even Elon Musk—disagreeing with this. "How does the nonprofit control be maintained? How is that mission going to be served?" asks Jill Horwitz, a visiting professor of law at Northwestern University. "From the press, we know that OpenAI will appoint all the directors of the operating entity. Will they do so in perpetuity? Who will they appoint? Will it be self-perpetuating? Can the for-profit investors have a say in who the directors are?"

In other words, OpenAI hasn't said what structure it will actually adopt. According to Michael Dorff, a professor at UCLA and Executive Director of the Lowell Milken Institute for Business Law and Policy, there are several options for the company to consider.

"If you had one class of stock, one vote per share, they would elect a board. You could just give the nonprofit the majority of the shares, and then they would then elect a majority of the board. They would therefore be in charge, at least for a while," he says.

"A little better governance could probably be achieved by having dual class shares, where the nonprofit would have a class of stock and they would be the only owners of that class of the stock that is either super voting shares, again, giving it a majority, or even better, you can define a class of stock and say it has the right to elect a majority of the board."

In essence, OpenAI's plan doesn't say how the company will ensure the nonprofit retains control. The nonprofit may have a "large" stake, but there are many ways this stake could be diluted. Even if we ignore the idea of an IPO for now, the company could still issue new shares or split its stock. In these scenarios, the nonprofit would lose control of the company unless OpenAI had special shares.

According to Bloomberg, Microsoft has yet to sign off on OpenAI's proposal. The company has invested nearly $14 billion in OpenAI. As part of its funding round last October, OpenAI had two years to shift to a for-profit business. If it did not, the $6.6 billion that it raised would convert to a debt. Control is likely very much still on the table in discussions between Microsoft and OpenAI, given that the latter’s financial future hangs in the balance. Further complicating any agreement is that the two parties will also need approval from the state AGs in California and Delaware.

"We look forward to working out the details of this plan in ongoing discussions with [the state AGs], Microsoft, and our new nonprofit directors," Altman added in the letter.

Most of OpenAI’s original plan remains intact. The organization will still restructure its for-profit subsidiary as a public benefit corporation. OpenAI intends to get rid of the existing profit cap structure that limits investor returns to 100x the principal and reserves surplus profits for the nonprofit. OpenAI has yet to generate a profit; it recorded about $5 billion in losses in 2021.

"This is not a sale, but a simplification of structure," wrote OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in a letter to employees that was shared by the company. Instead of the complex capped-profit structure that we have now — which made sense when it seemed like there might be one AGI effort to rule them all but doesn’t anymore, given all the great AGI companies — we are evolving to a normal capital structure with everyone holding stock.

How to stop paying for Netflix

An easy way to delete your account completely

If you are tired of Netflix and want to cancel your subscription, it is easy to do so. You can cancel your membership in a few steps depending on how you subscribed. Netflix allows you to easily upgrade or downgrade your plan in addition to canceling it altogether. Here, we guide you through how to cancel Netflix, switch your plan and everything you need to know before making any changes.

How to cancel Netflix subscription
It’s fairly straightforward to cancel Netflix, but how you do so depends on your subscription. If you subscribed directly through Netflix, you can cancel on the website or the mobile app. If you subscribed through Apple, Google or a cable provider, however, the process will be slightly different.

Cancel Netflix in the web
If you have signed up through Netflix.com, here are the steps to cancel your subscription from a desktop or mobile browser:

1. Sign in to Netflix.com.
2. Click your profile icon in the top-right corner and choose Account from the dropdown menu.
3. Scroll down to the Membership & Billing section of the page.
4. Select the Cancel Membership button.
5. To finalize the process, click Finish Cancellation.
Once you have canceled, your account will remain active until the end of your current billing cycle. Your viewing activity and preferences are saved by Netflix for up to 10 months in case you reactivate your account.

Cancel Netflix on the app
You can also cancel your membership from the Netflix app on Android or iOS (the steps are the same for both):

1. Open the Netflix app and tap your profile icon in the top-right corner.
2. From the dropdown menu, select Account. This will open a web browser window.
3. Follow the same steps as above from the web to cancel it.
While accessing through a mobile app, it simply redirects one to the account page based on the browser and therefore the steps remain the same.

How to cancel Netflix through a third party service
If you are billed through a third party, such as Apple, Google, Amazon, or a TV provider, the process is different. You must cancel your subscription through their billing system.

To find out who is billing you:

Go to your Netflix Account page.
Check Membership & Billing. If you see “Billed through Apple” or another third party, you must cancel through them.
Here’s how to cancel with some of the most common providers:

Apple (iPhone/iPad)
1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings.
2. Tap on your name at the top, then select Subscriptions.
3. Find Netflix in the list and tap on it.
4. Tap Cancel Subscription.
Google Play
1. Open the Google Play Store app.
2. Tap on your profile icon in the top-right corner, then select Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions.
3. From the list, find Netflix and tap on it.
4. Select Cancel subscription.
Amazon
1. Go to Amazon's Memberships & Subscriptions page.
2. Find Netflix in your list of subscriptions.
3. Click Manage Subscription and select Cancel Channel or Cancel Subscription.
Cable or mobile provider
If Netflix is part of your cable package (e.g., Comcast/Xfinity, Verizon or T-Mobile), you will need to cancel it through their app, website, or customer service. Please note that each provider has its own cancellation process, so you should check your account or contact their customer service for help.

What happens after you cancel your Netflix subscription
Once you cancel your Netflix account, it will remain active until the end of your current billing period — you will not be charged again unless you choose to restart your membership. Your profile details, viewing history, My List, and settings will be saved by Netflix for 10 months after cancellation. This means that you can pick up right where you left off if you decide to resume within that period.

If you are on the Netflix DVD plan, which is only available in the US, you must cancel it separately from your streaming subscription. You can do so under the DVD Plan section of your Account page.

How to change your Netflix plan
If you don’t want to cancel Netflix altogether, you have the option to switch to a lower-priced plan. Netflix offers a variety of different plans with varying features and price ranges. The available plans in the US as of early 2025 are as follows:

Standard with ads ($7.99/month): 1080p, ad-supported content, watch on 2 screens at a time

Standard ($17.99/month): 1080p, ad-free, two simultaneous streams, option to add extra members

Premium ($24.99/month): 4K UHD + HDR, four simultaneous streams, supports spatial audio and more download devices

Follow these steps to change your plan:

1. Go to Netflix.com and login.
2. Hover over your profile icon and select Account.
3. Click on Change Plan under Plan Details.
4. Choose your desired plan and click on Continue.
5. Confirm the change.
Your plan will change immediately. If you upgrade, you’ll be charged a prorated amount for the remaining days of your current billing period. If you downgrade, your change will take effect at the beginning of your next billing cycle.

How to delete your Netflix account permanently
If you want to cut ties with Netflix entirely, you can completely delete your account. This process will take a bit longer and will involve some email correspondence.

1. Navigate to Account > Security.
2. Click Delete Account.
3. Perform the security check.
4. From the available options, select Permanently Delete. Netflix will send a confirmation email.

Things to keep in mind
Before you can cancel or change your Netflix subscription, it is important to note the following:

Shared accounts: If you’re not the main account holder, you can’t cancel the subscription yourself (only the account holder can do that) — but you can remove your access by removing yourself from the account.

Downloaded content: Any downloaded content will be gone once your subscription ends.

Reactivation: Your membership can be reactivated at any time by going to your Account page and clicking Restart Membership.

Billing date: Your Netflix account page will show you the exact date you will be billed on. If you want to avoid being charged for another month, make sure to cancel your account before that date.

Frequently asked questions
Can I pause my Netflix subscription?
Yes, Netflix allows you to pause your membership, but only for one month. During this time, you can still watch your favorite content until the end of the current billing period. You will not be charged for the next billing period, and will be unable to access content while the pause is in effect.
At the end of your one-month pause, your membership will automatically resume and you will be charged for the next period. You can choose to “Pause for a month” via the “Cancel Membership” option in your Netflix account settings, and can repeat the process two more times (for a total pause period of three months at a time). However, if you prefer to take a longer break from the service, you may be better off cancelling your membership instead.

Will I receive a refund for cancelling early?
Netflix does not offer partial refunds. You will have access until the end of the month you’ve paid for.

What if I don’t see the Cancel button?
If there is no Cancel Membership button on your account page, you are likely being billed through a third party. Instead, you should follow the provider’s cancellation process.

Meta wins case against spyware maker that targeted WhatsApp and is awarded $167 million in damages

The social network sued the NSO Group in 2019 over its Pegasus spyware.

A jury has decided that the makers of Pegasus spyware have to pay Meta more than $167 million because they used WhatsApp to spread malware. The ruling is a major win for Meta, which has been embroiled in litigation with NSO Group for years.

Meta sued NSO Group in 2019 for its Pegasus spyware. At that time, Meta said that spyware had been used to target more than 1,400 people in 20 countries, such as journalists and civil rights activists. The company said the spyware was installed via video calls, with the malware delivered whether or not the calls were answered. Last year, a judge concluded that the Israeli company had violated the US Computer Fraud and Abuse Act in favor of Meta. The verdict was the result of a week-long jury trial to determine how much NSO should compensate Meta.

The jury awarded Meta $444,719 in compensatory damages, as well as $167,254,000 in punitive damages. Carl Woog, WhatsApp’s VP of global communications, said in a statement that the ruling would be “an important deterrent to this malicious industry and its illegal practices against American companies and the security and privacy of the people that we serve.”

NSO Group, a self-proclaimed “cyber intelligence” company, has said that it cannot use Pegasus on US phone numbers. In court, the firm argued that WhatsApp was not damaged in any way by Pegasus, according to Courthouse News Service.

In a statement, NSO’s Gil Lainer said this week’s decision is just “another step in a long judicial process” and that it may seek “further proceedings” or an appeal. “We are confident that our technology is critical for the prevention of serious crime and terrorism and is used legally and responsibly,” Lainer said. “This perspective, supported by extensive real-world evidence and countless security operations that have saved many lives, including American lives, was not considered by the jury in this case.”

Meta expects that securing payments from NSO will be tough going forward. “This is a long road to collect on damages,” Woog said. “Ultimately, we would like to make a contribution to digital rights organizations that are fighting back against these threats around the world.” He also said that Meta intends to ask a judge to order NSO not to target WhatsApp again.

Minecraft ended support for virtual reality today

The change we talked about got delayed.

Minecraft: VR No More
Minecraft, a game known for its cubic world, no longer supports virtual reality. This change was detailed in the latest patch notes for the game's Bedrock edition, released today. Mojang, the game's developer, announced this update in October. The update includes a note from the fall saying the platforms will be removed in March, giving players who enjoyed VR a few extra weeks to dive into their blocky landscapes.
Game developers don't remove an entire platform lightly. And when you're talking about Minecraft, with hundreds of millions of players still logging on around the clock, it's hard to believe that Mojang would ditch VR unless there was some serious back-end restructuring at play here. There are still plenty of must-have VR games to justify owning the hardware (Beat Saber, anyone?), but it's troubling to see a major title such as Minecraft give up on it altogether.

Apple calls to high court to overturn ruling that would allow for more antitrust lawsuits against their app store

The battle to determine the commissions that app stores take from in-app transactions wages on.

Last week, a federal judge gave a harsh opinion of Apple's fees for in-app transactions. Apple quickly filed an appeal for the new decision in the case with Epic Games about Apple’s anti-competitive App Store rules. Apple largely ignored the first 2021 order to dilute its in-app sales. This is because they have taken it upon themselves to interpret it differently.

The company has also said that, while it did follow the judge's initial ruling on the case, it will be challenging the decision through an announced appeal. What is not clear is whether Apple will have success if it does so: in her latest decision, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers did not spare Apple. In her ruling, she said in part: “Apple intentionally chose to violate the Court's Injunction. It did so with the specific goal of creating additional anticompetitive obstacles to artificially support the App Store's highly profitable model.”

Apple is also not saying what its legal arguments will be or what kind of case it will make in its appeal. With the case still working its way through the courts, companies like Epic Games and Spotify, that have a big presence on iOS, have quickly started to add ways to pay for their apps that do not rely on the App Store at all. The legal battle could go on for years as Apple continues to protect this huge revenue stream and its right to tax payments for sales made from the App Store.

Google is said to own video and TV with its tech-friendly company

100 Zeros funded the marketing of the indie horror film 'Cuckoo'.

Google is starting to make its own movies and TV shows. Google has partnered with Range Media Partners, to work on projects that are geared toward younger audiences. In addition to the opportunity for product placement, the larger goal of the 100 Zeros initiative is to fund projects that have a positive view of technology and get Hollywood interested in using Google products. Business Insider thinks it would make sense for Google to push Immersive View, 3D aerial scans of the world featured in Google Maps. Veo 2, Google's AI video model, seems like a natural candidate, too. Either way, the company has a movie under its belt already: Cuckoo. Indiasocialbook has reached out to Google for comment and will update this story when we hear back. Google also shared the following post on the X blog, confirming that 100 Zeros is not a studio but rather a way to help filmmakers integrate XR and AI into their work:

Google is known for its YouTube Red Originals. This program has been ended now, but it was popular. When YouTube started YouTube Red, now YouTube Premium, it also started original content. It hired some popular YouTubers to make series and films. So far, the program has produced some hits, like Cobra Kai, that have found homes on other streaming services. But it has never been a true competitor to Netflix.100 Thieves is just another version of YouTube Red. It’s a more traditional play to produce original content and sell it to other platforms — just with a Google spin, perhaps. The article was updated on May 5 at 3:30 PM ET with a social media post by Google confirming the launch of its new production initiative.

Gears of War is hitting the PlayStation for the first time ever on August 26

A revamp of the first game is also headed PC, Xbox Series X/S, and needless to say, Game Pass.

Another Xbox series, Gears of War, is coming to PlayStation. Gears of War: Reloaded, a revamp of the series' first installment in 2006, is scheduled for release on August 26 on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. Nintendo Switch 2 is not on the list as of now, however.
The game will cost $40 and will also be available on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. A free upgrade will be given to those who bought the digital version of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition before the remaster was announced. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will be able to play the third-person shooter on Xbox Cloud Gaming.
The Coalition, a Microsoft studio focusing on Gears of War, worked on the remaster with Sumo Digital and Disbelief. The remaster includes all Gears of War DLC at no additional cost, an additional campaign act, and all the multiplayer features. You will be able to unlock cosmetics and characters as you progress.
As usual, you can play the campaign with a friend via online or local split-screen co-op. The game has cross-play across all platforms, allowing up to eight players to compete against each other in the versus multiplayer mode. If you sign in with a Microsoft Account (which is not strictly necessary), you can unlock cross-progression. For example, if you bought Gears of War: Reloaded on a PS5 and played the multiplayer or campaign there, you can continue from that point on a tablet or phone via Xbox Cloud Gaming.
"Platform-specific features" aside, Gears of War: Reloaded supports 4K HDR visuals, 60 fps for the campaign, 120 fps in multiplayer modes, and Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and other visual, audio, and performance enhancements. Microsoft also says the campaign will be seamless with no loading screens.
The Coalition has another Gears of War project in the works. Gears of War: E-Day, which was shown during the Xbox Games Showcase in June, is being co-developed with People Can Fly, the studio behind Outriders. A release date has not been set yet.

Netflix hints at a new Squid Game season

The third season of Squid Game has been announced for June 27.

Netflix has teased the next -- and possibly last -- season of Squid Game, and things aren't looking great for the players. The streaming service released a teaser video that showed the games restarting after Player 456's failed uprising. Season 2 ended on a cliffhanger that suggested the rebellion would not be able to stop the games. Player 456 was shown in the teaser being brought back into a room of players inside a coffin. When he wakes up, the games return, players are divided into groups, mother and son are torn apart and -- oddly -- a baby can be heard crying by the end of the teaser. We also get a look at Jun-ho as he searches for the island where the games are taking place, and his brother In-ho who resumes his role as the games' Front Man after pretending to be a player in season 2.

Squid Game is a South Korean survival thriller that touches on themes related to class struggle and social inequality. The story follows regular people who are stuck in a facility locked down by the evil games director. Only one person can win the pot of money accumulated through the games played. The rest? They die. Seong Gi-hun, the show's protagonist, who won the first season, comes back to finish off the games organization, and it seems like the third part will be the last one. Squid Game 3 is coming to Netflix on June 27.

A porn site featuring deepfake videos has been shut down permanently

Mr. Deepfakes is no longer a threat.

In good news, non-consensual deepfake porn site Mr. Deepfakes has closed down, 404 Media reports. This was because the website lost one of its service providers.

"A key service provider has permanently withdrawn its services. We cannot continue our operations due to data loss," reads a notice on the site. "Our services are not going to return in any way, so please don’t believe any website that says otherwise. This domain is going to expire and we are not going to control or maintain any future use of it. This message will be taken down in about a week."

With other platforms cracking down on non-consensual deepfake porn, though, Mr. Deepfakes became a safe haven for this kind of content. Users uploaded videos and were able to commission their own deepfakes. It was also a breeding ground for sharing techniques, methods, and datasets. All of this was done in the name of creating non-consensual media that looked creepily similar (or sometimes identical) to real people.

Mr. Deepfakes' creator remains technically anonymous, but German newspaper Der Spiegel is said to have tracked down one of the people involved—a 36-year-old man in Toronto.

Criminalization of deepfakes has already begun in some countries. Last week, the US Congress passed a bill making it illegal to create, possess or distribute deepfakes for pornographic purposes. The main EU legal framework currently in place to prevent the creation or sharing of deepfakes is the e-Commerce Directive, which requires platforms to act against illegal content. However, there is currently no specific EU law that criminalizes deepfakes.

Apple is planning to change when they bring out iPhones

Prepare yourself for two iPhone reveals each year.

Apple’s new phones may come out at different times, but not quite as differently as before. Apple will put off the iPhone 17’s launch until the spring after the iPhone 16, The Information reports. This means we may have different kinds of iPhones launching at different times, rather than all at once in the fall.

But it’s possible that Apple is looking to make space for other models, such as the often-rumored foldable iPhone. Apple could release the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and the foldable iPhone in 2023, followed by the iPhone 17 base model, the iPhone 17 Slim and the iPhone 17e in spring 2024.

If you follow Apple’s launches closely, this isn’t really news. Since the iPhone 5, Apple has released its new iPhones either in September or October, but since the introduction of the iPhone SE lineup, which is generally launched in March or April, it has not followed this pattern. Apple has also just introduced the iPhone 16e in February to replace the SE range. As for the iPhone 17, we’re still on track for Apple’s usual schedule of four new iPhones in September.

SpaceX's Texas place, Starbase, is really about to be a city

The residents in part of Texas picked Starbase as a city. This land is where SpaceX is and it’s where Elon Musk builds rocket engines and more. 212 residents were for Starbase and six were against. But, most of the people in the area work for SpaceX. You need 143 votes to become a city.

Musk posted a celebratory tweet meanwhile the city made a post of their own, stating that “becoming a city will help us continue building the best community possible for the men and women building the future of humanity's place in space.” .The plan for Starbase was first mentioned by Musk in March this year when he tweeted about it for the first time. Now that the vote has taken place, Starbase will be separated from Cameron County as its own roughly 1.5-square mile city. This designation is particularly important considering SpaceX may be able to circumvent governmental red tape when it comes to scheduling rocket launches. Previously, Musk’s company had to get permission from county authorities to close a nearby highway or restrict public access to Boca Chica Beach and Boca Chica State Park for rocket launches.

Starbase was officially designated as a Texas city by the vote, but county commissioners and judges need to declare the election results final, according to Remi Garza, the elections administrator for Cameron County. Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino told NBC News that any changes to the existing procedures that SpaceX has to go through would be unnecessary even if Starbase took on building and permitting responsibilities.

Nintendo's suing that accessory brand that showed off Switch 2 mockups before they revealed it

Genki showed off fake designs at CES in January... before they even told us about the console.

Nintendo is taking on the company that showed off fake versions of the not-yet-revealed Switch 2 at CES 2025. On Friday, they filed a lawsuit against Genki, the accessory maker, for trademark infringement, unfair competition, and false advertising. They claim Genki tried to gain from the buzz around Nintendo's upcoming console. Nintendo says Genki pushed accessories it said would work with the Switch 2, without having the console, using the Switch logo.

In January, reports came that Genki brought Switch 2 fakes to CES and posted a video of a 3D render of it. Nintendo then said, through IGN, that neither the hardware nor the images were official. Genki first claimed to have a Switch 2 but later said on X they don’t have a black market console and told Game*Spark, through Automaton, their mockups were just based on leaks. Nintendo thinks Genki’s words were mixed up but they kept telling buyers their products would work with the Switch 2 when it comes out.

Nintendo told us about the Switch 2 on January 16, just after CES. But Genki kept using the hype to try and outsell Nintendo’s own stuff, even hosting a "Genki Direct" right after Nintendo Direct. After the lawsuit was filed, Genki shared on X that they’re serious about it and working on a careful response.

Here's what Genki said: We're on our own, making cool gaming gear for the fans we cherish. We're proud of what we've made and stand by our products' quality and uniqueness. Details are scarce, but we’re getting ready to fill orders and show off new stuff at PAX East this week.

After long waits and lots of guesswork, the Nintendo Switch 2 is finally coming. The lawsuit mentions Nintendo started on this next-gen console right after the first one came out. Pre-orders started in April, and it hits the shelves on June 5.

What Are the Most Trending Topics on YouTube in 2025?

What Will Be The Most Trending Topics On YouTube In 2025?

Knowing what the most trending topics on YouTube are is beneficial for both creators and marketers looking to engage audience focus in 2025. YouTube remains the undisputed king for video content consumption with over 79 billion monthly visits. This article examines the most rapid trends concerning YouTube and provides information with which you can stay ahead of the competition within the digital content world.

How AI Influences Its Users Online

AI has had a significant impact on trends revolving around YouTube. These days, video content has become easier to obtain, and creators are even using AI tools to produce videos that are efficient and interesting, especially using AI-powered animations and voice synthesis tools.

AI Shorts: Rapid Shot Content

Shorts has gained tremendous growth along with other short-form content, with more than 1.5 billion users driven by Shorts and quick editions from creators. Attractive to users as these pieces are normally below a minute. Content creators utilise Shorts for fast-paced entertainment as well as information.

Shopping while Watching Videos

YouTube’s attempts at introducing shopping features within YouTube videos are proving to be advantageous.

Creators now incorporate product links in their content so viewers may purchase directly through the media. This trend improves shopping by meshing purchasing, entertainment, and content.

Gaming Content: A Continual Powerhouse

Gaming content remains one of the most popular video categories on YouTube, representing a sizeable portion of the platform's total watch time. Everything from game playthroughs to live broadcasts garners a wide range and loyal viewership. Other creators have not only adopted these strategies but also introduce different games and more engaging viewing modes.

ASR and Relaxation Videos

ASR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) videos continue to engage audiences that need to unwind and have a stress-free time. Characterised by gentle sounds and visuals, these videos have created a huge market on YouTube. Other creators are also improving other ASR techniques to serve the viewers better.

Educational and How To Content

Videos and tutorial guides are among the top searches on YouTube. This platform, just like Google, serves as a solution for people looking for help in different activities, from home improvement do-it-yourself projects to academic lessons. Creators who ensure their content is informative, engaging, and structured are registering faster subscription rates.

Comedy and Satirical Skits

Comedy remains constant and ever-present in all forms of media, including on YouTube where content creators film satire skits of everyday life and entertainment.

These comedic videos appeal to people looking for entertainment and a funny take on contemporary issues. The creativity of the comedian and how the audience relates to the content play a huge role in its potential virality.

Sustainable Living and Eco-Friendly Content

“Green” eco-friendly content is gaining traction on YouTube, which is a positive sign that people are becoming more concerned about the state of the environment. Creators are making videos about leading a zero-waste lifestyle, eco-friendly products, and other sustainable practices. This not only informs the audience but also cultivates responsible buying behaviour.

Conclusion

Keeping up with the latest emerging trends on YouTube is extremely important for content strategists and marketers who want to effectively capture audience attention in 2025. AI-generated content and YouTube Shorts, immersive shopping, and sustainable living are but a sample of the many avenues the platform has for innovation and connection. Listening to these trends aligns content strategies aimed at maximising reach and impact in an ever-changing digital world.

Artificial Intelligence, Social Media, Sustainability, and Data Analysis

The integration of artificial intelligence with social media, data analytics, and sustainability is taking a toll in 2025. The combination of these factors is remarkable in transforming industries, shaping societal standards, and even altering the chronology of existence itself. Additionally, some new marketing strategies and consumer attitudes are emerging. However, this also brings forward some deep-rooted questions about corporate philosophies and ecological impacts, which need to be addressed immediately.

To learn more about data analytics click HERE.

Social media relies heavily on AI-powered algorithms for personalised recommendations and behavioural analytics driven by predictions. These, in turn, enhance user satisfaction. Businesses are also harnessing data analysis tools to monitor and enhance their efforts towards sustainability, which nowadays are aligned with eco-friendly practices. The combination of these innovations greatly improves the real-world results for the digital goals of the modern world.

The Role of AI in Social Media Evolution

From the perspective of AI, social media has undergone another major makeover. It is not just about the revolution in how AI assists in discovering new content; it's about how bespoke content is formed and proposed tailored to the users because of their past engagements. In point of fact, modern platforms apply intricate algorithms capable of observing users and pushing engaging fresh content for them in real-time, maximising both amusement and retention. Moreover, AI heuristic methods conditioned on machine intelligence have mobile predictive interfaces available to foresee requirements, enabling global proactive movements towards personalised engagements, which unlocks heightened interfaces for users worldwide.

Apart from global participation, AI-powered content creation applications are experiencing a backbone era, giving brands the ability to make relevant timely posts in strangers' timelines on predetermined clocks, which brings forward everlasting messages across diverse several pages that were spontaneously set within the automated time-and-press button application.

Data Analysis Driving Sustainable Practices

By using data analysis techniques, progress towards sustainability goals can finally be achieved.

Harnessing the interpretation of large data sets to put new strategies aimed at sustaining the environment into action is key for companies looking to innovate. The use of data in real-time helps businesses track their energy use, waste, and even resources helping them make good operational decisions.

The reporting of these metrics helps build trust between the stakeholders and the company, while also improving operational accountability to the stakeholders. Working with data makes:

Sustainability Efforts Enhanced through AI

AI systems improve resourceful functions that impact the environment by predicting the suffering zones. Machine learning increases the ability of anticipating energy use up to the point of increasing resource allocation and subsequently eliminating waste. In farming, AI helps monitoring the state of the crops, and irrigation further increases sustainable farming.

Reductions of carbon level emissions into the atmosphere AIs as well make it easier to monitor cleaner energy use with the advancements in smart grids and efficient transport systems. This further affirms how AI can come to the aid of intricate problems concerning the environment.

Social Media's Role in Enhancing Sustainability Awareness

Sustainability shapers have found social media users as one of the most powerful audiences. These users expose sustainability issues to the public during campaigns or when partnered with celebrities and this enables effective global actions.

User-sourced content and real-time interactions expand discussions on climate change, conservation, and responsible purchasing.

In addition, social media analytics offer target audience insights, enabling organisations to modify their strategies, as public sentiment resonates with participants surrendering to their striving goals. This engagement fosters activism and enlists members who actively champion environmental protection.

AI, Social Media, and Data Integration for Sustainability

The combination of artificial intelligence with social media offers new methods for resolving sustainability issues through innovative data analytical techniques. By utilising AI insights from social media, organisations can track activity, forecast trends, consumer behaviours, and craft tailored sustainability social marketing campaigns using techniques built on social media as a tool, which helps in devising forward-thinking policies that achieve business goals in tandem with ecological preservation.

In addition, multidisciplinary collaborative platforms that incorporate these technologies allow other stakeholders to document, report, and monitor best practices, progress measurement, as well as multi-stakeholder impact assessment. Such synergy is essential towards attaining long-term sustainability outcomes.

Challenges and Ethical Issues

Sustainability goals through social responsibility associated with AI technology synergised with social media feature many benefits, but do not come devoid of raising ethical scrutiny regarding its fusion with data analytical techniques. Data privacy concerns, the environmental footprint of data centres, algorithmic discrimination, and procedural inequity are among the discourse. AI usage, for instance, directly translates into carbon footprint which threatens sustainability attainment, due to dependency on energy facilities.

To adequately respond, the reforms necessitate providing more transparent framework policies, responsible frameworks entailing ethical AI policies, and bolstering investments in renewable resources to support the data infrastructure.

Ethical policies need to be developed with collaboration from everyone involved in order to successfully implement innovation while taking into consideration social and environmental responsibility.

Conclusion

The integration of artificial intelligence, social media, sustainability, and data analysis is forming a new digital world. New technologies can be applied for tackling sustainability issues, which would lead to creating a more positive impact on the environment. As we move forward with these technologies, it will be essential to remain focused on ethics in cooperation and innovative practices to create a sustainable and resilient future.

You will soon be able to use OpenAI's Deep Research tool for free

The corporate is growing the limits for all accounts as well.

OpenAI is providing free Deep Research access to ChatGPT users, and has also increased the limits of o4-mini for all users. It is a more cost-effective and efficient way to get similar, high-quality results that are "almost as smart" as the original OpenAI Deep Research. This was previously available only to paying Pro, Plus, Team, Edu and Enterprise subscribers, and even then they could only make a limited number of Deep Research queries per month.

Plus users, for example, had 10 questions, and Pro subscribers who paid $200 monthly could ask up to 125 questions. When users reach the original version limit, ChatGPT will switch to the lightweight one. Plus and Team users now also receive an additional 15 Deep Research requests per month on top of their 10, while Pro users receive an additional 125 tasks powered by the lightweight platform on top of their 125. Enterprise and Edu users are gaining access to the lightweight tool next week and will receive 15 more requests every month. Free users can use the tool to get up to five answers per month, powered by o4-mini.

Deep Research can analyze websites and other sources to create detailed reports with citations. The tool is "fine-tuned on the OpenAI o3 reasoning model," according to the company, but the lightweight version is "much cheaper to serve."

Intel has said that it will lay off staff as it tries to make its team more efficient

A few individuals will lose their jobs when the business eliminates middle management.

Intel's new CEO Lip-Bu Tan confirmed in a memo to staff that the company is to reorganise in a bid to cut costs and focus on its core competencies. The plans will see a number of jobs lost, but exactly how many is unclear. The world's largest chipmaker had 108,900 workers at the end of last year and could reduce that total by almost 20 percent, Bloomberg reported this week.

In the message, Tan described the reorganisation as an effort to reduce “unnecessary bureaucracy” and complexities and layers of mid-level managers. “I’m a big believer in the philosophy that the best leaders get the most done with the fewest people. We will embrace this mindset across the company, which will include empowering our top talent to make decisions and take greater ownership of key priorities,” Tan wrote. “These significant changes will inevitably result in a reduction in our workforce. As I noted in my very first message to employees, we need to make some difficult decisions in order to position our company for success in the future. This process will begin in Q2 and will be executed as quickly as possible over the course of the next several months,” Tan wrote.

This is not the first time Intel has downsized in recent years. In August 2016, Intel said it would lay off more than 15,000 employees to cut costs. Intel has been struggling with slowing sales — it hasn't moved fast enough to catch up with the industry’s pivot toward artificial intelligence.

AI is also a big focus for future Intel. "My focus will be ensuring that our team builds products that are highly competitive and meet our customer needs as we enter a new era of computing that is defined by AI agents and models," Tan told investors on a call. “To make this happen, we are taking a holistic approach to reshape our portfolio to optimise our products for new and emerging AI workloads. We are making the appropriate adjustments to our product roadmap to ensure that we are delivering best-in-class products while maintaining our execution sharpness and delivering on time.”

Tan is trying to shake things up by making Intel more of an engineering company moving forward. “Many of the changes we will be driving are aimed at making engineers more effective by eliminating unnecessary workflows and processes that hinder the pace of innovation,” he argued. The company is also aiming to “drive cost efficiencies in other areas, so that we can invest in our engineering talent and technology roadmaps.” These include a two-year goal of reducing operating costs by $1.5 billion.

One of the main reasons for these changes is to make the company more efficient. Tan wants managers to eliminate any meetings they can and cut down on the number of people invited to meetings as “too much valuable time is being wasted.” Intel is also expanding its return-to-office mandate by requiring workers to be on site four days a week (up from three) starting in September.

Tan certainly has high hopes for turning Intel around. “I’m talking about the chance to do nothing less than fundamentally reinvent an industry icon. To pull off a comeback that will be a case study in business school for generations. To invent new technologies and bring them to scale to make the world a better place,” he said. “At one time, Intel was universally viewed as the world’s most innovative company. We can get back there — as long as we make the changes to improve.”

YouTube tests its own AI Summaries

The tool doesn't always show the right things on Google search.

If you’re Googling lately, there’s a good chance you’ve seen an AI Overview in your search results. This tool, powered by Google’s gemini, attempts to save you a few clicks by pulling together information from the links that appear in your search results and presenting it in an easily digestible form. However, these overviews are often inaccurate and the tool has been plagued with hallucinations since it launched (to varying degrees of amusement).

Now Google is extending the tool to YouTube, with a test that sees a small portion of premium YouTube members in the US being shown video versions of AI overviews on select English search queries. While Google search will show LLM-generated text summaries, YouTube’s AI overviews will be more of a highlight reel for select videos.

In a post on the YouTube Community forums, Google said, “This new feature will leverage AI to identify key moments from videos that are most relevant to your search.” This will likely come up when you’re looking for more information about a product you’re considering buying (like “best noise cancelling headphones”) or when you’re looking for more information about an area and things to do there (as in “museums in San Francisco”).

However, this move raises some questions about the revenue model for creators on YouTube and how AI-generated clip reels would impact their earnings. A major concern with AI overview in search is that Google’s own summary takes up traffic that would otherwise go to the publications featured in the search results. And now the same concerns are likely to be visited on video content creators as Google brings these tools to YouTube.

Google will be seeking feedback on the overviews from YouTube Premium members, who can vote with a thumbs up or thumbs down on the AI-generated clip highlights. It’s not clear how long Google intends to keep this pilot running or whether it has designs on bringing YouTube’s AI overview beyond premium subscribers in the future.

Netflix now has dialogue-only subtitles

Aren't you supposed to read this in a FRIENDLY voice?

Netflix is adding a new type of subtitles. With the start of the fifth season of the psychological thriller You, they will offer dialog-only captions in addition to the usual subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH/CC).

To clarify: SDH/CC subtitles do not only transcribe dialog, but also include sound descriptions such as [alarm rings], [knock on door], or [Don't Stop Believing intensifies over the jukebox]. The new Netflix option will eliminate these non-dialog audio cues.

The dialog-only subtitles are accessible from Netflix's language picker under "English" (SDH/CC subtitles will still be tagged as "English (CC)"). The company has stated that all upcoming Netflix originals available in SDH/CC languages will include the new format, beginning with season five of You.

Meta finally admits it has a big spam issue on Facebook

This company does not say it uses AI for sending spam.

Meta is working on fixing that. This is the basic message that the company sent in its update, where it admits that Facebook has too many spammy posts on the platform. In the update, the company writes that Facebook Feed isn’t always showing new and interesting posts that you want to see and enjoy. We are working on it. The company plans to “crack down” on the worst offenders. At the same time, Meta says it will reduce the reach of creators who post “long, distracting captions” and posts with unrelated or irrelevant captions. These accounts are no longer eligible for monetization. The company is taking “more aggressive” action against “spam networks that coordinate fake engagement,” including making the comments of these accounts less visible, removing Facebook pages that are “designed to inflate reach.” Meta is testing a feature that will allow users to anonymously downvote comments to label them as not “useful.” It is worth noting that Meta is continuing its efforts to make Facebook more attractive to “young adults” as the update was released. As part of their new attempt, the company has brought back a tab for friends’ content, a move that Mark Zuckerberg said made the platform more like “OG Facebook.” It’s also worth noting that Meta didn’t mention anything about the more persistent type of engagement bait that has emerged on Facebook throughout the last year. But one of the bigger persistent forms of engagement bait that has been plaguing Facebook over the last year is AI slop. This is the phenomenon, documented at length by the crew at 404 Media, that involves the circulation of bizarre, often nonsensical AI-generated images — such as the infamous “Shrimp Jesus” — that do nothing so much as drive engagement for people trying to make money on or off Facebook. What’s more, these spammers are often assisted in their efforts by Facebook’s own algorithm, which promotes the posts, researchers have determined. Engagement bait and AI slop aren’t the only types of low-quality content that has inundated users’ Facebook feeds in recent years. I see posts from pages that simply seem to screenshot old Reddit posts from r/AITA or rehash celebrity news stories about people I don’t follow or have any interest in on a regular basis. Most of the viral content on the platform is actually mundane and formulaic, designed to get millions of comments via requests to “amen” or solve simple math — something Meta might not be able to squeeze into its latest crackdown, but also isn’t necessarily the content that many Facebook users are actually enjoying. The company does acknowledge that it’s also trying to “uplift” the creators who are actually sharing original content by taking action against accounts that are simply stealing that content. But given how much easier it is to create AI slop than to produce and share good original content, it might be a long time before Meta gets the spam problem under control.
